I love a little "friendly" competition and when Brynn and Gage both make an offer on an outdoor sporting store, that's what the seller demands. They have to work together for a year as partners, much to both of their dismays. As the email correspondence begins, each comes off across as stuffy and...old...but I loved seeing them both soften as the story progresses and in unexpected ways. Brynn has had some major disappointment in her life and is determined to make the most of her talents. She's innovative, sweet, and willing to work hard. Gage is determined to prove himself with his ideas, business skills, and knowledge. As a reader, I could see that they're an obvious match, both in and out of the workplace, but they have to figure that out through some big challenges--namely, that Brynn has no idea who Gage really is. The clues are there but she's naïve, which is charming, in a way.
I have to admit, I would be pretty upset to discover Gage's secret if I were in Brynn's shoes, but her reaction is perfect! I especially love the way the author portrays honest feelings and reasons, which endeared me to the characters even more. This is a sweet story with a slightly nostalgic feel that left me with a smile. I love a good, clean romance, and would've been happy with a swoony kiss or two.
Content: very mild romance.

Kayaks and Kisses A Romance Renovation Novel Vintage Romance edition by Maria Hoagland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
"Kayaks and Kisses" (2016, Red Leaves Press) is the second story (as far as I can see) in the "Romance Renovations" series by Maria Hoagland. It is a standalone story set in Ruidoso, New Mexico which puts me in mind of my annual trips in the fall to Lake Placid. Thanks to my GR friend Katie's Thanksgiving shelf, I was able to find this seasonally appropriate book to read. I was very happy to borrow it from the Lending Library. At 119 pages, I think it can be considered a novella.
Rating 4 stars
The heroine Brynn Caley is an Olympic-level skier who fell just shy of her Olympic dreams. After contemplating the move for a couple of months, she is about to make an offer to purchase an outdoor sports store. Brynn is told that "an eager buyer approached the owner, Mrs. Bradshaw, just this morning … [and has] made a generous offer." It seems that another of Brynn's dreams may now be thwarted.
The hero Mr. Konewko (sounds like Canoe Co.) is the businessman in question. Fortunately for Brynn, Mrs. Bradshaw doesn't want to just give up her life's work to the highest bidder (a stranger) when she's known Brynn for years. Rather than choosing between the two potential buyers, she gives Mr. Konewko and Brynn twelve months to work together, after which they would "decide if either one or both of [them] want to purchase the entire business."
Christian elements Ms. Hoagland is an LDS author, but this book does not seem to be an LDS book. It was obvious that the characters' favored drinks were all non-alcoholic, which prompted me to check on the status of the author.
Is it clean/chaste? Yes! If I remember correctly, there is one foot rub, one snuggle, and one kiss.
What I liked This book was inspired by "You've Got Mail" and "The Little Shop Around the Corner". I had a lot of fun reading this one.
What I didn’t like I found a very occasional awkwardness with the writing. Example below
"I hope you find your trip beneficial in educating you about our…"
That should have been written with about "yourself" rather than "you."

The bottom line This was a truly fun read. I recommend it to fans of short contemporary romances and/or "You've Got Mail." I look forward to reading more by this author, and plan to read "Home for the Holiday," which is the first in the same series.
I read the description and was hooked.
This book was amazing. Cute and fun! Perfect storyline. I couldn't put the book down.
5 stars for a story that I didn't want to end. I hated getting to the last page, I wanted it to go on and on. Maria has a way of painting a story so you can see it unfold in front of you. You fall in love with her characters and want to become a part of thier lives.
This was a fun book to read! I loved the characters and the movement of the story. I thought her play on words was clever and the description of the town and its people and places made me want to visit. The relationship between between the two main characters, both very strong personalities, was well done with some unexpected twists and turns. This is yet another great read from author Maria Hoagland!
This was basically a good story. It needed to be edited. The abrupt ending was a surprise and somewhat disappointing.
Just found another new author! Maria Hoagland is a great writer. She keeps you involved from beinning to the end. Loved it!
I like books that remind me of author Janette Oke- where the romance is sweet and clean. This book fit the bill. It was a fun read. Being a fan of Ruidoso, I could easily picture the scenes and I really liked the characters. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Hoagland.
