Calling Romeo Alexandra Potter 9780743470322 Books Reviews

The refreshing thing about this story is that it starts where most romantic novels leave off... the two lovers have already managed to overcome obstacles and get together... so now what? If you've ever sat in a theater after a romantic comedy and wondered what happens next, when the two lovers have to make it in the REAL world of dirty laundry and cranky moods and unemployment, etc... this book will take you down that path. The path for our heroine is sometimes fraught with disappointment, difficult choices, mixed messeges and romantic complications, but it's fun going on that journey with her... and watching her make the same mistakes a lot of us in the real world do! Of course, her life is a bit more fabulous than the average gal, but that's the other part I liked about the book! I felt I got an inside peek into hip London life. I didn't want the story to end! If Juliet were a real person, I'd want her in my circle of friends, cause she'd always have the funniest observations, the best gossip and a sweet, understanding ear when the boyfriend situation gets to be a pain! Pick up this book, now that Sex and the City is off the air, it'll help ease the loss!
My opinion of this book falls somewhere between reviewers dblynn and jbb/ny - I started, lost interest, skimmed the middle and started reading again halfway through, totally hooked until the end. Was it predictable? Well, yes. Does knowledge of Sex and the City, Bridget Jones and any other well-known romantic comedy of the last ten years or so help put it in context? Yes on that, too. However, I liked the point of view of the author and I thought she created real people who are less than perfect, who don't always say what would work for the plot but what real people actually say. Is it a romance book? Sort of, although it is more than that with much to discuss with friends afterwards.
A good women's book club read.
I had a problem with this book pace. It was too, too slow!! It took an effort to get through the first 40% (I am reasoning kindle), after that luckily it got a little faster but not nearly enough to name the book gripping. The main story was ok I guess, but the side stories were annoying. The best friend part was boring in the beginning, depressing in the middle, and just meh in the end. The 80-years-old naighboor part useless! A waste of pages, the author uses it in the end, but should have found a different way.
What a s**t book to tell you the truth. Absolutely, utter drivel is what this book is.

Firstly, I've said this time and time again, I despise infidelity! And I despise characters who cheat on their partners. They redeem themselves a little bit when their partner is a complete jerk, and they end up leaving him/her to be with the person they cheated on them with. However, when it's simply cheating for the sake of cheating, then there is no redemption as far as I'm concerned.

Juliet, oh Juliet, what a complete self-absorbed, arrogant idiot you turned out to be. When this book first started, with Will, her long-term boyfriend stands her up on Valentine's and then continues to neglect her etc. I think OK, this guy needs a good slap in the face. When Juliet finds herself soaking wet due to an insensitive man in a flashy car driving straight into a puddle, I think oh this poor thing, like she needed this to top off her night!! When the driver pauses, and tries to reverse and find the girl, I think oh how sweet. This is going to be good!!

Fast forward to several chapters in, when Will once again ditches her for a work emergency on one of her biggest nights at work. She ends up going to a masquerade work party alone, and you won't believe it!!! YES, she meets the handsome jerk who ruined her furry coat. He begins to pursue her in the sweetest ways that you think this must be meant to be!

Only he suddenly turns creepy for some reason. They travel to Verona together (yes, I know, Verona, Juliet, Calling Romeo, get it? How lame can it get.) and he seems distant, and weird, and not as sweet as she remembers or as I even remember. Obviously at that point, we as readers, can all figure out where this is headed, him being her rival competitor agent for a big project she's working on. She comes back home, decides to break it off because she's weirded out, goes back to her man, Will, and he seems to have gotten a wake up call when he goes on a trip to his family's and just like that, everything is great between them once again.

Well, of course, until he finds out about her infidelity. Then s**t hits the fan and he leaves her and she's heartbroken. Even though she deserves it, and does not deserve a shred of sympathy. Now the ending, they meet at a wedding, and they somehow reconcile, although it's left open ended as they drive off Grease style into the sunset.

What a horrible piece of crap this book turned out to be. I mean, if you're going to write a book about infidelity, make it a little more convincing, a little more realistic. And please, explain to me WHY, why would you add that part at the beginning where the Skylar (the jerk) stops and tries to look for Juliet after having drenched her? Why do you add this star-crossed, meant to be, strangers meet, storyline if you're just going to completely disregard it later on? It's not like he came after her after she left him, he seemed completely OK with her putting a stop to the affair like it meant absolutely nothing to him.

Hated every aspect of this book, it was so boring, the dialogue so empty, the narrative so redundant, that I could barely get through it.

Do not recommend it.
Calling Romeo is a chicklit novel that focuses on strain relationships and finding a solution on how to secure your place under the sun. Although I had fun reading Juliet’s story, I thought her friend Trudy’s struggles being pregnant and being a single parent was more appealing and relatable. Between the two ladies, I actually found Trudy a much stronger character as she is firmer with her life after a devastating shrug-off from the one who got her pregnant.

Likewise, Will wasn’t really the kind of guy a reader would want for the female lead, but his transformation softened my heart. At first, I wasn’t entirely buying the whole Romeo & Juliet vibes in the book, having to go all the way to Verona Italy and all. Don’t start me with Sykes, I definitely wasn’t a fan of him either.

Juliet’s story is rather common among women who are caught up in a relationship where the men in their lives can no longer sustain the romance. I liked how Will stood his ground when he learned about his girlfriend’s infidelity and came up with the biggest decision of his life. That ending though, kinda ruined it for me. I dunno, I just didn’t expect it to end that way.
