Jason Hanford is an ordinary guy, living an ordinary life, until he discovers the power of the written word. He begins his letter writing innocently enough by exchanging letters with Kyoto, a female pen pal in Japan. When that takes an unexpected turn for the worse, Jason then takes his passion for writing letters to the next level by writing letters of complaints to various organizations, which complaints yield him freebies, such as complimentary restaurant meals. Those who thwart him in life also find themselves at the mercy of Jason's letter writing campaign. Then Jason discovers that he can write letters for a living, but at a cost that Jacob could never have imagined.

This is a dark, quirky, imaginative book. Who knew that the mere act of writing a letter could have such horrific significance? This is definitely a book that fans of the author will greatly enjoy, as will all those who like horror fiction. It is with good reason that Stephen King is such a fan of this author.

Dispatch is an unusual novel for Bentley Little it is written in the first person and the narrator, Jason Hanford is a rather nasty character. There are levels of evil, however, and Jason is not as bad as what he will face.

As Jason recounts, he lived in a troubled family with an alcoholic father, an uncaring mother and a deadbeat older brother. An elementary school teacher gets him involved in a pen pal project and he starts corresponding with a Japanese girl, enchanting her with false stories of himself. Eventually, the letters start getting sexually explicit (at least for [...] year old) and Jason gets in trouble, but he is learns that he enjoys letter writing. By the time he is in his late teens, he is writing complaint letters to companies to get free stuff and - with false identities - creating local political controversies. Some of his letters are particularly sinister, as he starts accusing people of crimes and eventually people die because of his writings.

Although he drops the writing eventually and gets married and has a child, his letter writing is an addiction that can only be suppressed for so long. This will cost him deeply, but also gets him an offer from a mysterious company that promises great rewards if he just writes his letters. Despite his gut feelings telling him to avoid the job, he takes it.

There is definitely something supernatural about this business and Jason finds himself a minor part of a very evil machine. Unfortunately, there appears to be little escape once the job is taken. Somewhere behind the scenes is the Ultimate Letter Writer, an enigmatic figure which is nearly omniscient and omnipotent. Jason realizes that he is not a nice guy, but the Ultimate Letter Writer is something far darker.

This is rather typical Bentley Little fare, which is a good thing well-written horror with a healthy dash of satire. It is not perfect as is typically the case, his stories fall apart a bit at the end. Overall, however, this is a fast-reading good novel that should satisfy fans of the genre.
A book that would've worked twice as well if it had been half the size, Bentley Little's "Dispatch" gives us a glimpse into the weird world of Jason Hanford, a man who discovers at an early age that he has an affinity and talent for writing letters. He writes them in staggering quantities, and the results they get are equally staggering. It's almost as if they possess a certain indescribable power -- governmental policies change, people die, lives are altered. Perhaps its just a gift ...

It's an intriguing premise, but not an intriguing novel. Never mind the redundant descriptions of Hanford's letters, never mind the almost comical (and hardly creepy) twist the novel takes 2/3rds of the way through, and never mind the glaringly obvious plot elements (half of which turn into holes). The weakest spot in this novel is, in fact, the central character himself, a man so despicable that it is hard to care about anything that happens to him, scary or not. The novel treats us to a healthy dose of his horrific childhood, so it's not hard to imagine how he became the man he is, but that's not enough to make him a sympathetic character, let alone an interesting one.

The novel's premise, however, IS interesting enough to make you wonder where it's headed, to keep you reading through the stalls and the padding, and the writing is deft enough to make the trip go quickly. The final destination, unfortunately, succumbs to too much silliness and is, ultimately, nothing to write home about.
